Mlynická Valley is one of the hidden gems of the Western High Tatras — a roughly 6-kilometre-long glacial valley with a beautifully terraced shape and the striking pyramid of Štrbský Peak standing guard at its upper end. Whether you come for the cascading waterfalls, the string of mountain lakes or simply the wild, untouched atmosphere, this valley delivers on every front.

The valley unfolds in three distinct sections — Predná, Stredná and Zadná poľana — each revealing a new layer of the landscape as you climb higher. The lower stretches are forested and gentle, the middle section opens up into broad alpine meadows with sweeping views, and the upper reaches are rugged and rocky, dotted with crystalline lakes. The centrepiece of the lower valley is the 25-metre Skok Waterfall, which thunders over the first rocky threshold with impressive force, especially during spring snowmelt. Higher up, a whole constellation of lakes awaits — Capie pleso (2,075 m), Okrúhle pleso (2,105 m), the Kozie plesa lakes and the Volie plieska — each with its own mood and colour.

• Mlynická Valley has been a National Nature Reserve since 1991 — please stay on marked trails at all times.
• The trail from Štrbské Pleso is accessible year-round, but the upper parts of the valley can be challenging or snow-covered outside summer months.

Near Capie pleso, a memorial plaque and a few scattered wreckage pieces mark the site of a tragic helicopter crash from 25 June 1979, when a rescue mission ended in disaster — a sobering reminder of how quickly conditions can change in the mountains.
