Mengusovská Valley is one of the grandest valleys on the Slovak side of the High Tatras — a sweeping glacial landscape dotted with mountain lakes, rugged peaks, and trails that suit everyone from casual walkers to seasoned alpinists. It is home to the deepest lake in the Slovak Tatras and leads all the way up to one of the highest mountain huts in the country. If you visit just one valley in the Slovak High Tatras, make it this one.

The valley stretches broadly and opens up in its upper section into two distinct basins: Hincova kotlina, dominated by the magnificent Veľké Hincovo pleso, and Kotlina Žabích plies, with its trio of beautiful alpine lakes. Near the valley entrance lies the iconic Popradské pleso, fringed by forest and easily reachable even by beginners. In summer the valley is alive with the sound of streams and the shimmer of blue water; in autumn the dwarf pines glow amber against grey granite, and in winter a thick blanket of snow transforms everything into an Arctic stillness.

• The valley lies within Tatra National Park and is a protected national nature reserve — stay on marked trails at all times.

• The trail from Kotlina Žabích plies continues to Chata pod Rysmi (Slovakia's highest tourist hut) and onwards to the summit of Rysy (2 499 m).
