Skalnaté pleso is a captivating glacial lake tucked in the Slovak High Tatras at 1751 m above sea level — a place where alpine wilderness meets mountain hospitality, sitting right beneath the iconic Lomnický štít peak. Whether you arrive on foot or by cable car, the atmosphere here is unlike anywhere else in the Tatras.

The lake covers 1.23 ha and is framed by dramatic mountain scenery. Spring and post-rainfall visits offer the fullest water levels, while summer brings lively trail traffic and stunning panoramas. Winter transforms the area into a snow-dusted retreat with a mysterious, almost fairy-tale quality. Keep in mind that water levels can fluctuate significantly — in dry periods the lake may shrink or even dry out temporarily, which only adds to its unique, ever-changing character.

• The year-round Skalnatá chata mountain hut is located right by the lake — only 4 overnight spots, so book well in advance.
• A snack bar, restaurant and hotel 'Encián' are available on site.
• The cable car from Tatranská Lomnica stops here — a great option for combining a cable car ride with a hike down.

Just above the lake on the slope of Hunsdorfský vrch (1783 m) stands a meteorological observatory where, on 2 January 1949, the highest wind speed ever recorded in Slovakia and Czechoslovakia was measured — a staggering 248 km/h. In earlier centuries the surrounding valley was famously rich in chamois and marmots.
