Lokvarsko Lake is a 40-meter-deep artificial lake tucked into the dense coniferous forests of Gorski Kotar. This is a place where calm water meets untamed Croatian nature, drawing hikers, cyclists, water sports fans and anglers from all over the region.
The scenery around the lake is striking in every season - in summer the surrounding green slopes mirror on the still surface, while in winter the area turns into a quiet, snow-covered retreat. It's a favorite spot for outdoor recreation, whether you're up for a lakeside walk, a bike ride, or just relaxing by the water. The lake was created between 1952 and 1955 when the Lokvarka River was dammed, flooding a valley that once held the settlement of Srednji Jarak and three sawmills.
How to get thereIn 1973, the world's largest river trout was reportedly caught right here, weighing an incredible 25.40 kg. The lake has also hosted the first world championship in underwater orienteering and numerous international rowing regattas.
