Bâlea Lake is one of Romania's most spectacular glacial lakes, sitting at 2,034 m in the dramatic Făgăraș Mountains. What makes it truly special is the combination of raw alpine scenery and surprisingly easy access — in summer you can drive right up via the legendary Transfăgărășan road, one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the world.

The atmosphere here shifts with the seasons in the most striking way. Summer brings glassy reflections of rocky ridges, wildflower meadows and a lively crowd of hikers and road-trippers. Winter transforms the landscape into something almost otherworldly — deep snow, frozen shores and a silence broken only by the wind. Two chalets operate year-round, so you are never far from a warm meal or a place to rest, and both a meteorological station and a Salvamont mountain rescue post are on site.
