Lake Bajer is an artificial reservoir near Fužine in Gorski Kotar that has grown from a hydropower project into one of the region's favorite spots for tourists and weekend visitors. Just about 30 kilometers from the sea, it offers a peaceful mountain lake experience within easy reach of the coast.
Created in 1952 by damming the Ličanka River for the Vinodol hydropower plant, the lake today is surrounded by well-maintained walking promenades that make for an easy, scenic stroll in any season. In summer, the water draws anglers and boaters, while in winter the surrounding area becomes a cozy base for winter tourism thanks to nearby restaurants and rooms for rent.
How to get thereThe word 'bajer' means simply 'artificial lake' in some parts of Croatia - and this one on the Ličanka is proof of how a hydropower project can turn into a genuinely charming destination.
