Tucked away in a quiet arolla pine grove just west of the busy Štrbské pleso, Jamské pleso is one of those hidden High Tatra gems that feels like a reward in itself. At 1,447 m above sea level, this small mountain lake offers calm, beauty, and a genuine sense of wilderness without a demanding hike.

The lake sits in the Važecká Valley beneath the sub-peak of Jama, after which it is named. With a surface area of just 0.67 hectares and a maximum depth of 4.2 metres, it is intimate rather than grand — but its setting makes it unforgettable. The surrounding arolla pines fill the air with a distinctive resinous scent, and the still water mirrors the rocky ridges above. In summer it offers a cool escape from the heat; in autumn the forest turns golden around the dark water; and in winter, when snow blankets the pines, the scene is almost fairy-tale-like. The famous Tatra Magistrale trail passes right by, making this a natural stop on longer routes.

• The lake lies within the Tatra National Park (TANAP) — please stay on marked trails at all times.
• The arolla pine grove on the western shore is protected; do not enter it.

The eastern shore was once home to a private chalet belonging to Gustáv Nedobrý, a celebrated Slovak hiking pioneer and mountain rescuer — it burned down in 1943, and the ruins were destroyed by retreating German forces in 1944. The pine grove on the western bank was later planted in honour of the Slovak National Uprising heroes.
