The Hartenstein Forest is a sprawling, unbroken woodland stretching along both banks of the Zwickauer Mulde river, from Stein Castle down to the mysterious Prince's Cave. It's a place where legend and nature intertwine, offering a quiet escape into one of Saxony's oldest cultural landscapes.

The terrain here is wonderfully varied — steep valley slopes covered in beech and spruce, damp riverside meadows, and rocky outcrops like the Knoblauchfelsen. In spring the forest floor is carpeted with wild garlic, summer brings butterflies and dragonflies along the river, and autumn turns the beech woods into a blaze of color. As part of the Natura 2000 network, the area has been left largely undisturbed since the late 20th century, allowing it to slowly return to a more natural state.

How to get there

• Hartenstein (parking on Talstraße) — via the Dreibrückenweg or Mühlweg trail, approx. 1-2 hours, easy to moderate difficulty
• Alternatively follow the Muldentalwanderweg or Lößnitzer Weg along the river valley

Good to know

• Prince's Cave (Prinzenhöhle) — an 18-metre rock fissure you climb down into, originally a medieval mining shaft
• Forsthaus Zur Prinzenhöhle restaurant sits just below the cave
• The area is a protected nature reserve within Natura 2000 — please stick to marked paths
• Home to rare species including fire salamanders, eagle owls, black storks and Tengmalm's owls

Legend has it that two knights hid in the Prince's Cave after kidnapping a Saxon prince on the orders of Kunz von Kaufungen — a medieval intrigue that still draws curious visitors today.
