The Großhartmannsdorf Great Pond, also called Zehntler Teich, is the largest reservoir of the historic Freiberg mining water system and the biggest standing water body in the Ore Mountains. Built in the 16th century to supply water for Freiberg's mining industry, it has since become a haven for waterbirds and a peaceful destination for nature walks.

The surrounding landscape is a mix of wetlands, peat bogs and forest, changing character with the seasons - nesting birds in spring, blooming bog plants in summer, and misty water surfaces in autumn. The 492-metre dam and the over 60-hectare lake create an impressive scene, and the calm atmosphere invites visitors to slow down, perhaps with binoculars in hand.

• The area has been a protected nature reserve (NSG) since 1967, with restrictions on leaving marked paths
• It forms part of the Natura 2000 (FFH) site 'Freiberger Bergwerksteiche'
• Spring and autumn are best for birdwatching, as the pond serves as a resting site for migrating birds

Peat was extracted here until 1961, leaving traces still visible in the landscape today. Carp farming has continued at the pond since it was first created more than 450 years ago.
