Olczyska Valley is one of those quietly charming corners of the Polish Tatra Mountains that rewards those willing to step off the beaten track. A forested, peaceful valley opening near Jaszczurówka, it offers an authentic taste of the Tatras without the crowds that flood more famous routes.

The valley covers around 4.5 km² and stretches from about 900 m above sea level up towards the summit of Kopa Magury (1704 m). Its most remarkable feature is geological: the valley floor is built on limestone and dolomite, which means most of it stays dry — rainwater simply soaks into the porous rock and travels underground. This creates the extraordinary Olczyska Spring (Wywierzysko Olczyskie), the largest resurgence spring in the Polish Tatras, where water gushes dramatically back to the surface. Grey alders line the stream, and in spring the slopes burst with blooming marsh marigold. The hillsides of Mały Kopieniec host one of the largest concentrations of Scots pine in the entire Tatra range. Spring brings fresh greenery and quiet, summer offers cool shade under spruce forests, and autumn paints the valley in warm colours.

Time from Jaszczurówka to Olczyska Polana: approx. 40 min (down 35 min); from the meadow to Wielki Kopieniec: approx. 1 h (down 45 min). Difficulty: easy to moderate.
• Olczyska Polana — yellow trail to Nosalowa Pass. Time: approx. 30 min (down 25 min). Difficulty: easy.

• The valley lies within Tatra National Park — stay on marked trails at all times.
• Historic shepherd huts are preserved at Olczyska Polana — a lovely spot to take a break.
• The Olczyska Spring feeds Zakopane's water supply; the immediate area around the intake may have restricted access.

Here's a fascinating fact: the water that erupts from the Olczyska Spring actually originates in the neighbouring Pańszczyca Valley — the underground journey it takes is one of the most remarkable hydrological phenomena in the Polish Tatras.
