Mały Kopieniec (1,170 m a.s.l.) is a quiet, off-the-beaten-path summit in the lower montane zone of the Western Tatra Mountains, tucked between the district of Jaszczurówka and its taller neighbour, Wielki Kopieniec. It is exactly the kind of place that rewards those willing to venture beyond the well-worn tourist trails.

The peak has a split personality: its southern flank drops steeply toward the Olczyska Valley over a band of rocky cliffs, while the northern slopes ease off gently into the broad ridge that shelters the Zakopane suburbs of Niżnia and Wyżnia Chłabówka. Open clearings and rocky outcrops break up the forest cover — a legacy of centuries of sheep grazing when this area formed part of the Hala Kopieniec alpine pasture. In autumn the beech and spruce woodland glows with colour, making even a walk along the base of the hill a memorable experience.

• Jaszczurówka (Zakopane) — no officially marked trail to the summit; the Przełęcz między Kopieńcami pass (1,109 m) can be reached via an unmarked route, difficulty: moderate, requires basic navigation skills
• Oswald Balzer Road traverses the northern slope at 900–960 m between Jaszczurówka, Wyżnia Chłabówka and Toporowa Cyrhla — a pleasant, easy walk that lets you explore the foothills of the peak

• No marked hiking trails cross the massif — off-trail navigation experience is recommended
• At the foot of the northern slope, above the Olczyski Stream, lie two caves: Jaszczurowska Wodna (33 m long, entrance at 915 m) and Jaszczurowska Wyżnia (18 m long, entrance at 951 m)
• A historic chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Jaszczurówka stands along the Balzer Road and is worth a short visit
• A former ski run from Hala Gąsienicowa over the pass to Zakopane once crossed this area — it is now permanently closed

The treeless clearings and clifftop views over the Olczyska Valley are a direct echo of the pastoral history of Hala Kopieniec — a reminder that these mountains were shaped as much by shepherds as by glaciers.
