Divoká rokle, or Wild Gorge, is a striking nature reserve on the eastern edge of Ústí nad Labem, right by the settlement of Mojžíř. It's a special stop for anyone curious about geology - a unique exposed rock outcrop reveals layers of volcanic rock up to 200 meters thick, deposited in a basin-shaped depression of the pre-volcanic landscape.

The scenery here is rugged and untamed, true to its name - steep slopes, rocky walls and dense vegetation create a wild, almost untouched atmosphere just outside the city. In spring and summer the surrounding slopes turn lush green, autumn brings the colours typical of the České středohoří hills, and winter strips the rock bare, giving it an almost lunar character. It's a great spot for a peaceful walk away from the crowds, with a front-row view of the region's volcanic past.

How to get there

• From Mojžíř (a district of Ústí nad Labem) - short approach along local paths, easy route
• Alternatively from central Ústí nad Labem on foot or by bike heading east, within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area
