Rote Wand is the most striking peak in the Lechquellen Mountains and the second highest after the Untere Wildgrubenspitze. Its name comes from the red Liassic limestone that forms its dramatic, nearly 400-metre-high south face. This is a hiking destination for the sure-footed and experienced, rewarding effort with truly outstanding panoramic views.

The mountain's character is wild and alpine. On its north side, just below the summit, lies a small glacier - one of the lowest (around 2600 m) and most impressive in the Northern Alps. To the south, at its foot, spreads the beautiful Formarinsee lake, voted Austria's most beautiful spot in 2015. Snowfields can linger on the slopes well into summer, and the mountain's red-toned rock faces glow especially vividly in changing light.

• Alpe Laguz (reachable by hiking bus in summer) - steep trail, approx. 3.5-4 hours from the hut, demanding
• Alternative starting points: Alpe Klesenza, Formarinalpe, or the Freiburger Hütte - all routes converge on the steep northwest flank

• The final stretch involves exposed, easy climbing (UIAA I+) along a splintery northeast ridge - suitable only for experienced, confident mountain hikers
• The Freiburger Hütte (1931 m), above the southern shore of the Formarinsee, offers accommodation and meals
• The wooden summit cross from 1966 was replaced in 2020 with a new one, carried up by climbers

On a clear day the view extends an astonishing 168 km to the Feldberg in the Black Forest, and even as far as the Vosges Mountains, 253 km away.
