Pelousek (489 m a.s.l.) is a modest but geologically fascinating hill in the Liberec district, rising about 1 km southwest of the village of Modlibohov. It's a great pick for travelers who enjoy exploring quieter corners of the Kotel Highlands away from the crowds.

The hill forms part of a system of magmatic dikes running parallel to each other in a NE-SW direction. Nearby, on the same discontinuous dike, sits the hill of Jelínka, while close to the east runs the smaller Devil's Wall (Malá Čertova zeď) and, more famously, the Great Devil's Wall (Velká Čertova zeď) to the west. The surrounding landscape is defined by peaceful forests and the gently rolling terrain typical of the Ralsko Uplands, especially atmospheric in autumn and early spring when the rocky formations are more visible through the bare trees.

How to reach the summit

• Road II/278 (Kotel - Český Dub), parking north of the hill - then on foot through the forest, no official trail leads to the summit
• The hamlet of Za Vrchy (accessible from Český Dub) - a yellow-marked trail runs through the forest south of Pelousek, continuing to the Pod Čertovou zdí junction

Practical information

• No official trail leads to the actual summit - reaching it requires some off-trail orientation through the forest
• The nearest marked trail (yellow) only passes south of the peak, not over it

Pelousek is a real treat for geology enthusiasts - the dike system it belongs to creates several parallel rock formations across the region, including the famous Devil's Walls, making this area a unique open-air natural museum.
