Hockstein is a rocky summit in Saxon Switzerland National Park, rising 115 meters above the Polenz valley. It's a place where history and scenery meet — once an outpost of Neurathen Castle, now a favorite viewpoint for hikers.

The summit rewards visitors with sweeping views over the Polenz valley toward the town of Hohnstein. The surrounding landscape is classic Saxon Switzerland — sandstone formations wrapped in forest that turns especially beautiful in autumn. At the foot of the rock lies the roughly 20-meter-long Hocksteinhöhle cave, where pottery finds suggest it once served as a guardroom during the days of Hohnstein Castle.

How to reach the summit

• Via the historic Steinbrücke (Stone Bridge) built in 1821, one of the oldest tourist structures in Saxon Switzerland — easy route
• Alternatively through the scenic Wolfsschlucht gorge

Practical information

• The route forms part of stage 2 of the famous Malerweg (Painters' Way)
• Worth a stop: the Hocksteinhöhle cave at the base of the rock, linked to the history of the nearby castle

The name Hockstein was first recorded only in 1843 — before that the mountain went by several names, including Heckstein, Hockenstein and Hochstein, hinting at its long and quietly forgotten past.
