Standing just 305 metres above sea level, Rauenstein punches well above its weight — this elongated sandstone mesa rises dramatically above the Elbe loop near Rathen, offering sweeping views, deep rocky gorges, and a mountain restaurant that has been welcoming hikers since 1893. It is one of Saxon Switzerland's most rewarding short hikes.

The ridge path known as Rauensteingratweg stretches 1,745 metres along the crest of the massif, crossing three impressive ravines via metal staircases and ladders cut into the rock. From various viewpoints along the way, the flat-topped table mountains of Saxon Switzerland spread out before you — Königstein, Lilienstein, Pfaffenstein — while to the north-east the famous Bastei massif dominates the skyline. The forest covering Rauenstein turns into a spectacular palette of gold and amber in autumn, making it a favourite season for visitors.

• Weißig (tourist car parks) — yellow trail (Malerweg), approx. 30 minutes, easy
• From Rathen or Königstein — yellow trail (Malerweg), following the ridge route
• Southern approach — red trail from Stadt Wehlen via Bärensteine towards Rathen, passing the foot of the massif

• The Berggaststätte Rauenstein mountain restaurant operates on the eastern plateau — open since 1893, fully renovated in 2006/2007
• Rauenstein is an official climbing area with eight rock faces; the most famous is the 18-metre Nonne (first ascent 1888)
• The ridge trail includes metal staircases and ladders — not suitable for pushchairs

Look out for dates carved into the sandstone walls — the year 1813 appears in several places, a reminder that local villagers sheltered among these rocks during the Napoleonic Wars.
