The Wartturm is a striking sandstone rock tower standing about 20 metres tall in Saxon Switzerland, close to the famous Bastei. Small in size but big in character, it dominates the view along the Elbe when seen from Bastei and Rathen.

Perched dramatically above the Elbe just below Rathen, the Wartturm is a landmark of the region's rugged sandstone scenery. Its jagged silhouette stands out sharply against the river valley below, and the surrounding forested slopes shift with the seasons, framing the rock in green in summer and golden hues in autumn. This is prime Saxon Switzerland climbing territory, where dramatic rock formations rise straight from the riverbank.

How to reach the summit

• From Rathen — the Wartturm is reached via climbing routes rather than a hiking trail; the classic 'Alter Weg' route (grade III-IV) requires climbing experience and equipment

Practical information

• This is a climbing peak, not accessible by a regular walking path — a rope and climbing skills are required to reach the top
• Climbing near the rockfall edge from the 2000 collapse is prohibited
• A temporary climbing ban was imposed after the 2000 rockfall but lifted again after a few months

On 22 November 2000, the Wartturm was the site of one of the most spectacular rockfalls in Saxon Switzerland in recent decades, when about a third of the rock — roughly 450 m³ of sandstone weighing some 800 tonnes — broke away and crashed down the slope. Remarkably, a climber sheltering in a hut just metres away escaped unharmed.
