Gamrig is a 253-metre rock summit rising just above the village of Rathen in Saxon Switzerland. Thanks to its free-standing position above the valley, it rewards visitors with one of the region's most rewarding panoramas — without the crowds you'll find at the nearby Bastei.

From its flat rocky top you can look out over the Elbe valley, the village of Waltersdorf and the surrounding sandstone plateaus. On a clear day the view stretches to Stadt Wehlen, the Lokomotive rock formation, Lilienstein, Königstein Fortress, and even as far as Zirkelstein and the Schrammsteine. In autumn and spring, when mist rolls over the Elbe below, the scene becomes truly dramatic — it was exactly this kind of view that inspired Caspar David Friedrich's famous painting 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog'. In summer the exposed plateau can get quite sunny, so an early start is a good idea.

How to reach the summit

• Rathen (lower village) — stepped path, approx. 30-40 minutes, easy difficulty
• Waltersdorf — alternative approach from the east across the plateau, easy terrain

Practical information

• A well-built stepped path leads to the summit on the western side of the rock massif
• The summit plateau has NO safety railings — take extra care, especially with children
• At the foot of the southeastern face lies the Gamrighöhle, a cave artificially enlarged in the 19th century for sand extraction
• Gamrig is also a popular climbing area with six climbing summits and over 130 routes

The name Gamrig derives from the Slavic word kamen, meaning 'stone' — a fitting name for this striking rock outcrop that has captivated hikers and artists for centuries.
