The Himmelhorn (2111 m) is one of the most legendary peaks in the Allgäu Alps - a place known not for postcard views but for its reputation as one of the most dangerous grass-climbing routes in the region. It is not an independent summit but rather the highest point of a grassy ridge running from the Schneck southwards, plunging in extremely steep grass and rock flanks into the Oytal valley.

The character of this place is raw and untamed - steep grassy slopes, crumbling rock sections, and a surprisingly rich flora comparable to that of the neighboring Höfats and Schneck. There are no marked trails here, and the atmosphere is demanding and serious - this is a place for experienced mountaineers, not casual hikers. In summer the grassy flanks become slippery and treacherous, while the views down into the Oytal only heighten the sense of isolation.

How to reach the summit

• From the Himmelecksattel - difficulty II, about 3/4 hour, grass and scree climbing, partly very exposed, poor protection options
• From the Schneck fore-summit - difficulty II, about 3/4 hour, particularly demanding descent through a 70-degree grass slope
• The Rädlergrat - a classic route starting at the Stuibenfall waterfall and following the southwest ridge

Practical information

• No marked paths exist - excellent climbing skills, sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential
• The harder routes (grade VI, A2, A3) rank among the most demanding and dangerous grass climbs in the Allgäu Alps
• The historic Rädlergrat is nowadays climbed via a variant through the south face (VI-, A2) due to numerous fatal accidents on the original route

The Himmelhorn became famous after the first ascent of the Rädlergrat in 1910 by teacher Hermann Rädler, and the tragic 1956 accident of three brothers from Oberstdorf inspired both a book and a crime novel featuring inspector Kluftinger.
