Großer Wilder rises to 2,379 metres in the Allgäu Alps, its western face plunging dramatically toward Wildenfeld as a sheer rock wall. This is a mountain for seasoned scramblers - even the easiest route to the summit demands climbing skill and confidence on trackless, rubble-strewn terrain.

The peak actually comprises three summits: the main (middle) summit at 2,379 m, the southern secondary summit known as Hinterer Wilder (2,359 m), and a northern rise (2,370 m). A popular route climbs from Himmelecksattel along the north ridge to the north summit, continues along the ridge to the south summit, then descends to Wildenfeldscharte. The rock on the moderate routes is consistently loose, so care is essential throughout. The ridge traverse rewards climbers with sweeping views over the surrounding Allgäu peaks, and the atmosphere is wild and remote - ideal for those seeking genuine alpine adventure away from crowds.

How to reach the summit

• Himmelecksattel — via the north ridge, about 1 hour 15 minutes, grade II, demanding scramble
• Himmelecksattel — via the Gamswanne, about 1 hour 30 minutes, grade I+
• Wildenfeldscharte — to the south summit, about 45 minutes, grade I+, orientation tricky especially on descent

Practical information

• All routes require experience on trackless rock and scree terrain
• Rock quality is loose on the moderate-grade climbs
• Descent via Wildenfeldscharte is notably difficult to navigate
• A favourite among ski mountaineers - the Hinterhornbach approach is skiable even in deep winter, while other routes are usually done in spring
