Geißstein rises to 2363 m above sea level right on the border between Tyrol and Salzburg, within the Kitzbühel Alps and the Pinzgau grass mountains. It's a peak that combines gentle grassy slopes with rugged rocky ridges, making it a rewarding destination for hikers of varying experience.

The mountain's character shifts dramatically depending on the approach — the southwestern side is relatively flat and grassy, while the southeastern flank is notably steeper and rockier. Summer visitors enjoy sweeping panoramic views across the Kitzbühel Alps, while in winter the gentler southwestern route becomes a popular ski touring option. According to local legend, gold was once mined on Geißstein, and the nearby Schlaberstatt was said to host mysterious festivals where devils were rumored to mingle among the musicians.

How to reach the summit

• From Stuhlfelden (800 m, town center) — marked trail through the Mühltal valley to Bürglhütte (1700 m), then up the south ridge to the summit, elevation gain 1563 m, moderately demanding
• From Mittersill (Burkbachbrücke, 950 m) — via the Arnoweg trail past Liendlalm and Rosswegscharte (2060 m) to Sintersbachscharte (2035 m), then along the cable-secured west ridge to the summit, requiring good footing and no fear of heights, elevation gain 1413 m

Practical information

• Bürglhütte (1699 m) is one of the main starting points and can be reached by car via a farm road in summer
• The final stretch of the western ridge route is secured with steel cables
• The southwestern route from Bürglhütte is used as a ski touring route in winter
