Geißspitze is a 2334 m peak rising above Tschagguns in Austria's Montafon region. It rewards hikers with sweeping Rätikon views and a quieter alternative to the area's more crowded summits.

The summit area and the ridge stretching to Wilder Mann and Kreuzspitze form part of a large protected biotope, valued for its geological diversity and rich variety of species. The steep grassy slopes are prone to landslides, known locally as Plaiken, which churn up the soil and release minerals that nourish lush meadow vegetation. In winter the terrain can turn hazardous — during the avalanche winter of 1999, a slide swept down from the peak all the way across the access road to Lindauer Hütte, leaving a scar in the forest that is still visible today.

How to reach the summit

• Via Gauertal valley through Lindauer Hütte (1744 m) — about 1.5 hours on the Geißspitzsteig trail from the hut, demanding route
• Via the Golmer Höhenweg — take the Golmerbahn cable car to the upper station (1890 m), then hike via Golmer Joch (2124 m), Latschätzkopf (2219 m) and Kreuzjoch (2261 m), around 2 hours walking

Practical information

• A ski ascent from Lindauer Hütte is possible but requires stable avalanche conditions due to the steep grassy slopes
• Lindauer Hütte, near the starting point, makes a convenient base for the climb

In spring and summer the slopes come alive with lush meadows fed by minerals exposed through natural landslides — a striking example of raw alpine forces shaping new life.
