Bratkivska Velyka (1788 m) is one of the wildest and most rugged summits of the Gorgany range — a part of the Ukrainian Carpathians that experienced hikers consider the most untamed and authentic corner of these mountains. If you are after a peak with real character and genuine solitude, this is the place.

The summit and its upper slopes are blanketed by chaotic fields of sandstone boulders, some reaching up to 3 metres in height — the defining feature of the Gorgany, demanding careful footwork at every step. Below, dense spruce forests cover the slopes up to about 1400–1600 m, giving way to mountain pine scrub higher up. The views from the top take in the neighbouring peaks of Hropa (1763 m) and Durnia (1709 m) to the northwest, and Ruska (1677 m) and Chorna Kleva (1719 m) to the east. To the south lies the Okole pass, a gateway to the Svydovets massif.

Late summer and early autumn offer the best conditions — the boulder fields are dry and the visibility is superb. Winter transforms the peak into a serious mountaineering challenge.

• Bystrytsia or Chorna Tysa (Zakarpattia side) — green trail via Okole pass, difficulty: demanding.
• Brustury — alternative approach from the Zakarpattian side.

• The summit sits on the boundary between Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia oblasts — the route may cross a border-adjacent zone, so check current access regulations before setting out.
• The sandstone boulder fields (locally called 'horghany') are unstable and become slippery after rain — take extra care.
• The green trail over Okole pass connects the Gorgany massif with the main Svydovets ridge.

The Gorgany are the only range in the Ukrainian Carpathians where such vast fields of sandstone boulders — the phenomenon that gave the whole range its name — create an almost lunar landscape, and Bratkivska Velyka is one of the finest places to experience it.
