Polonyna Krasna is one of the Eastern Carpathians' best-kept secrets — a sweeping mountain massif in Ukrainian Zakarpattia where vast subalpine meadows stretch to the horizon and the only sounds are the wind and birdsong. If you're chasing wild, crowd-free mountains, this is your place.
Covering around 570 km², the massif lies south of the main Carpathian watershed, framed by the gorges of the Tereblya and Teresva rivers. The landscape here is strikingly open — broad ridges draped in polonyna grasslands descend into deep valleys thick with beech and spruce forest. In spring the meadows burst into colour, summer brings panoramic views stretching all the way to the Maramureș basin, and autumn turns the forests into a blaze of gold and red. Two main sub-groups — the Menchuл Group and the Hropa-Topas-Syhlianskyi Group — are separated by a scenic pass at 999 m above sea level.
Highlights:The name 'Krasna' simply means 'beautiful' in Ukrainian — a fact that feels entirely justified the moment you stand on the summit of Syhlianskyi on a clear summer morning.
