Rising like a natural fortress above the shimmering waters of Izvorul Muntelui lake, the Ceahlău Massif is one of Romania's most dramatic and atmospheric mountain destinations. Often called the 'Romanian Olympus,' this isolated giant in the Eastern Carpathians has a raw, almost sacred quality that draws hikers, nature lovers and photographers alike.

The terrain here is genuinely varied and rewarding. Dense silver fir and spruce forests give way to rocky ridges and towering conglomerate formations, with sweeping views over the reservoir lake that wraps around the massif on three sides. Streams tumble down into gorges, and the two-tier Duruitoarea waterfall — dropping 30 metres through mossy rock — is one of the most beautiful sights in all of the Romanian Carpathians. The altitude brings real mountain weather: fog rolls in frequently, and snow can fall even in summer on the higher plateaus.

• Trail difficulty: moderate to demanding — summit routes require good fitness; waterfall trails are suitable for all levels
• Getting there: by car via DN15 from the north and east, or DN12C from the south; local buses run between Bicaz and Durău

The forests and rocky slopes of Ceahlău shelter an impressive roll-call of Carpathian wildlife — brown bears, wolves, lynx and chamois — while the humid woodland hides the Carpathian newt, an endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.
