Cabana Izvorul Muntelui is the main base camp for exploring the Ceahlău massif, one of the most legendary mountain ranges in Romania's Eastern Carpathians. Sitting at around 800 m altitude, this hut marks the spot where the road ends and the real mountain adventure begins — surrounded by dense forests, rushing streams and the dramatic rocky silhouettes of peaks rising above.

The setting here shifts beautifully with the seasons. In summer, the spruce and fir forests are cool and fragrant, the meadows dotted with wildflowers, and the views up toward Ocolașul Mare (1907 m) and Toaca (1904 m) are simply breathtaking. Autumn paints the slopes in deep gold and red, while winter brings a heavy blanket of snow that can linger well into spring. The whole massif is protected as Ceahlău National Park, home to brown bears, lynx, chamois and over 180 bird species — including the western capercaillie deep in the spruce forests.

• From Cabana Izvorul Muntelui (800 m) — red stripe trail, via Poiana Maicilor and Ocolașul Mic to Cabana Dochia — approx. 4–4.5 hours, moderate to demanding.

The hut has a fascinating origin story — what started as a simple forester's lodge built in 1933 by Friedrich Haner was gradually expanded and renamed several times, finally becoming 'Cabana Izvorul Muntelui'. It was here that the historic 1.5-metre-wide trail to Cabana Dochia was first cut through the mountain, laying the foundation for the entire trail network on Ceahlău.
