Jezeří Castle is one of the most striking sights in the Czech Republic — a Baroque residence perched on the slopes of the Ore Mountains, standing quite literally on the edge of a massive open-pit coal mine. The contrast between aristocratic elegance and industrial devastation makes an unforgettable impression.

The castle sits on a rocky outcrop offering dramatic views — forested mountain slopes on one side, the vast crater of the ČSA coal mine on the other, stretching almost to its walls. How to get there

• From Horní Jiřetín — local access road, approx. 20-30 minutes, easy route
• From Litvínov — about 12 km, by car or local transport, followed by a short approach to the castle

• The castle is state-owned, managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ)
• Open to visitors, some rooms furnished in period style
• Since 2023 designated a National Cultural Monument
• In 2020 it became the first Czech monument listed among Europe's most endangered heritage sites by Europa Nostra

Fun fact: the castle theatre reportedly hosted a private premiere of Beethoven's Third Symphony, and it was only the stable rock block beneath the castle that saved it from planned demolition due to coal mining.
