Althann Castle in Międzylesie is one of the most intriguing historical landmarks in the Kłodzko Valley — a place where a medieval stronghold seamlessly blends into a Renaissance manor, which in turn opens onto grand Baroque palace wings. If you enjoy exploring places where different centuries speak to each other through stone and stucco, this is well worth a detour.

The complex impresses from a distance. A polygonal Renaissance tower, still bearing traces of sgraffito decoration on its facades, dominates the skyline and gives the whole ensemble a distinctive character. Two Baroque wings enclose a stately courtyard, creating an intimate, almost theatrical space. In spring, when greenery softens the old walls, the castle feels almost magical. In autumn, under grey Sudeten skies, it takes on a more mysterious, brooding atmosphere that suits its turbulent history perfectly.
