Kłodzko Fortress is one of the best-preserved military complexes in Central Europe — a sprawling, over 30-hectare labyrinth of bastions, moats and underground tunnels that pulls you through several centuries of turbulent history. This is a place where you can literally go underground and experience what defending a fortress felt like from the inside.

The stronghold towers over the town of Kłodzko from Fortress Hill, offering sweeping views over the town and the rolling hills of the Kłodzko Valley. The massive walls and bastions impress in every season — in spring when greenery creeps over old brickwork, in summer during vivid historical reenactments, in autumn wrapped in golden mist, and in winter when frost gives the stone giants an almost otherworldly character. The atmosphere is truly special: silence broken only by footsteps on cobblestones and wind whistling through the arrow slits.

• From Kłodzko town centre — entrance from Czeska Street, a short uphill walk, easy, approx. 10–15 minutes on foot
• Alternative entrance through Wróbel Gate from the eastern side — follow the historical trail opened in 2018

• Open to visitors since 1960
• The underground route is approx. 1 km long — bring a warm jacket, even in summer, as temperatures below ground are low
• Every year at the end of August, the Kłodzko Fortress Days festival takes place, featuring Napoleonic battle reenactments, a craft market and the RockBastion outdoor concert
• A historical reenactment group recreates soldiers of the 47th Prussian Infantry Regiment from 1806
• In 2022, a previously unknown network of 18th-century countermine tunnels was discovered beneath the fortress

Look out for a curious stone monument on the fortress grounds engraved with a hat — local legend links it to Napoleon, but it is actually a 1937 monument commemorating German colonial territories, with the inscription once reading: 'Remember our colonies'.
