Turnul Gros, or the Thick Tower, is one of Sibiu's most fascinating relics of medieval fortification — a massive 16th-century artillery tower that later became the stage for the city's cultural life. It's a rare place where military history and theatre history collide in one striking building.

Built around 1540 by Markus Pempflinger, the tower has a distinctive semicircular, U-shaped design, projecting about 25 metres beyond the outer city wall. Its lower level once held casemates with firing slits, while cannons stood on the platform above to defend against Ottoman threats. Walking through Sibiu's old town today, it's easy to imagine the tower's layered past — from a defensive stronghold to the site of the first city theatre in 1788, where even a young Mihai Eminescu once worked as a prompter. The atmosphere shifts beautifully with the seasons: golden in autumn, atmospheric in winter mist, and lively year-round thanks to its role as a concert hall.
