Bärenstein Castle is a former hilltop fortress turned noble residence, perched on a rocky spur above the Müglitz valley right at the edge of the village of Bärenstein in the Eastern Ore Mountains (Osterzgebirge). Its walls trace a story that begins in the 12th century, once home to the noble families of Bernstein and later Lüttichau.

The castle forms an irregular angular structure with a round tower dating back to the 14th century, topped with a flat conical roof since the 16th century. Renaissance-style round-arched portals from 1522, a Gothic star-vaulted ceiling, and marbled wooden ceilings from the 17th century all speak of centuries of change. The surrounding landscape is quietly scenic - the Müglitz valley view is especially striking in autumn when the Ore Mountain forests turn golden, and in winter when snow blankets the hills for a classic Erzgebirge fairy-tale feel.

Interestingly, a knight named Albrecht von Bernstein was already documented here in 1165, making this one of the oldest traces of settlement in the region - from here, the colonization of the upper Ore Mountains and its mining industry began in the 14th century.
