Perched on a bluff at the confluence of the Włodzica and Ścinawka rivers, the Renaissance castle of Scharfeneck in Sarny is one of the most captivating hidden gems of the Kłodzko region in Lower Silesia. Far from a forgotten ruin, this is a living heritage site being lovingly restored by a dedicated foundation — and it warmly welcomes curious visitors.

The castle is surrounded by a sweeping landscape park designed in the 1880s by the celebrated Prussian garden artist Eduard Petzold. A long avenue of sycamore maples, ancient pedunculate oaks estimated at up to 410 years old, and open views over the Włodzica valley create an atmosphere that feels genuinely timeless. Spring brings lush greenery, autumn sets the park ablaze with colour, and in winter the bare trees reveal the full grandeur of the historic architecture.

• Sarny hamlet (part of Ścinawka Górna) — reachable by car from Radków or Nowa Ruda; parking available at the castle complex; exploring the grounds is easy on foot
• The site can also be included as a stop on longer hiking routes through the Kłodzko County and the Table Mountains area

• The gatehouse — one of the oldest structures on site — has been open since 2017 as a tourist information point and entrance to the chapel
• The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk (1722–1730) features remarkable trompe-l'oeil frescoes from 1738 — a highlight not to miss
• The park has been a certified member of the European Route of Historic Gardens (Council of Europe) since 2020
• Nine natural monuments within the park, including an oak estimated at around 410 years old
• The 'Mountains of Literature' Festival takes place here annually; since 2022 the castle is its main stage

Interesting fact: in 2022 a 'Platinum Jubilee Oak' was planted in the park — the only tree in Poland planted as part of the Queen's Green Canopy initiative marking 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
