Perched dramatically on the hill of Pohanská at the western edge of the Little Carpathians, Plavecký Castle is one of Slovakia's most atmospheric medieval ruins. With over 750 years of history, crumbling towers and a wild, untouched feel, this is the kind of place that makes you forget you're just a short drive from Bratislava.

The hilltop setting rewards visitors with sweeping views over the surrounding villages and forested ridges. The castle sits within the Pohanská National Nature Reserve, so the trail up is itself a pleasure — winding through unspoiled woodland. Spring and autumn are especially beautiful, though the ruins look wonderfully dramatic under a blanket of winter snow too. The whole atmosphere is raw and romantic, a far cry from heavily restored tourist castles.

• The castle ruins are freely accessible — no entrance fee or ticket office
• Nearby attractions include Plavecká Cave on the northern slope and the remains of a medieval monastery on the southern foot of the hill
• A prehistoric hillfort (Pohanská) sits on the same hilltop

History lovers will be intrigued to know that between 1579 and 1584, one of Slovakia's very first printing presses operated right here — Protestant writer Péter Bornemisza published calendars, bibles and hymnals within these very walls.
