Záruby (767 m a.s.l.) is the highest peak of the Small Carpathians in western Slovakia — and while the elevation may seem modest, this ridge delivers a surprisingly rewarding experience with limestone crags, rich wildlife and sweeping views on clear days. It is a perfect escape into nature without the crowds of larger mountain ranges.

The peak forms part of a long east-west ridge running across the Pezinské Karpaty subrange. Along the way, characteristic limestone rock faces emerge from the forest, offering glimpses over the surrounding hills. The summit area itself is wooded, so views are somewhat selective, but from the right spots you can spot Veľká Javorina, Inovec and Zobor — and on exceptionally clear days, the Alpine peaks or the Moravian Pavlov Hills appear on the horizon. A cross marks the top. The whole area falls within the Záruby National Nature Reserve and the Protected Landscape Area of the Small Carpathians, home to a remarkable variety of rare and protected plant and animal species.

• The summit lies within a National Nature Reserve — please stay on marked trails at all times.
• The ruins of Ostrý Kameň castle (576 m) sit at the western end of the ridge and make for a great addition to any hike here.

The fairy-tale Smolenice Castle nestles at the foot of the massif — combining the hike with a visit to the castle makes for a truly memorable day out in this part of Slovakia.
