Piața Mare — the Great Square of Sibiu — is one of the most stunning medieval squares in Central Europe, and the beating heart of this remarkable Transylvanian city. Paved with granite cobblestones and framed by colourful baroque and gothic buildings, it is the kind of place that makes you slow down, sit down, and simply soak it all in.

The square has a wonderfully layered atmosphere: in summer it buzzes with café terraces and street musicians, in autumn the honey-coloured facades glow warmly, and in winter the Christmas market transforms it into something truly magical. The surrounding architecture spans centuries — Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque — all coexisting in effortless harmony. The square is completely flat and accessible to everyone, making it an easy and rewarding stop for any visitor.

For centuries this square witnessed not only trade and civic gatherings, but also public executions — in 1703, Johann Sachs von Harteneck, Count of the Saxons, was beheaded here. Today that same spot is where visitors pause for photographs, a perfect reminder of how living history is in Sibiu.
