Peștera Românești is one of Romania's most unusual caves — not just for its natural beauty, but for its extraordinary acoustics. Since 1984, the Speotimiș Speleological Association has hosted concerts inside its Concert Hall, drawing crowds of up to 2,000 people to hear performers ranging from the Banatul Philharmonic to the band Zdob și Zdub.

The cave lies on the left slope of the Fărășești Valley, near the village of Românești in the Poiana Ruscă Mountains. It stretches 1,450 metres across three levels. The main entrance, 9.5 m wide and 2 m high, lets in diffused daylight for about 70 metres, giving the algae-covered walls near the entrance a greenish glow. Deeper inside, the Bat Hall — carved into rare tectonic breccia — shelters a permanent bat colony. The surrounding limestone valley and forested slopes make for a scenic approach in every season, especially colourful in autumn.

How to get there

• From Timișoara: take the E70 to Lugoj, then DN 68A via Făget to Coșava, continue on the local road through Valea lui Liman to Românești — from the village (near the cemetery) follow the yellow cross trail marker, about 1 hour on foot, moderate difficulty
• From Deva: take DN 68A via Margina to Coșava, then follow the same route as above
• Alternative route: via the Izvorul lui Miron Monastery, then about 2.5 km toward Fărășești, through a small gorge section, followed by a 120 m climb up a path on the left slope to the cave entrance

Good to know

• The upper and middle levels are subfossil and open to visitors
• The lower level is accessible only to trained speleologists with proper equipment
• Archaeological digs uncovered cave bear bones and Neolithic artefacts, now displayed at the Banat Museum in Timișoara
