Palača Municipija is the former town hall of Rijeka, an elegant building whose three striking façades dominate Trg Riječke rezolucije. It is not a mountain summit, but a charming stop for anyone exploring the city before or after a day on the surrounding trails, offering a slice of Rijeka's political and architectural history.
Designed by architect Filibert Bazarig in a classicist style influenced by Venetian architecture, the building features refined pilasters, alternating triangular and segmental pediments, and a horizontal cornice beneath the attic. The small square it faces feels intimate and representative, framed also by the Church of St. Jerome and the classicist rear façade of the Radio Rijeka building - a lovely spot to pause, especially in the soft evening light.
In front of the palace stands the Stendardac, a stone column erected to hold the city flag, inscribed with the 1508 decree of Emperor Maximilian guaranteeing Rijeka's civic freedoms. It stands as a lasting symbol of the city's centuries-long struggle for municipal autonomy.
How to get thereA nice detail to look for: the column's relief depicts St. Vitus, patron saint of Rijeka, holding a model of the city in his hand.
