Perched on the rocky summit of Cigánka (935 m), Murán Castle is one of Slovakia's most atmospheric ruins — and the third highest-situated castle in the entire country. With centuries of turbulent history, sweeping views and a dramatic approach trail, it rewards every visitor who makes the climb.

The ruins command a striking position on the southern edge of the Muránska planina National Park. From the crumbling walls you look out over the forested valleys of Gemer and the wild limestone plateau stretching northward. The setting changes beautifully with the seasons — wildflower slopes in spring, deep green forest in summer, fiery colours in autumn, and an almost eerie stillness in winter when mist curls around the old stones.

• From the village of Muráň — red trail, approx. 450 m elevation gain, moderate difficulty. The trail passes the Zámok mountain hut (843 m), from where a short but steep final push (~90 m) leads to the castle gate.
• From Predná Hora saddle — yellow trail, much less elevation gain, easier option.
• From Javorinka saddle — blue trail, nearly flat, suitable for leisure cyclists (though less scenic).
• From Muránska Huta — red trail (Rudná magistrála), approx. 200 m elevation gain, quiet valley approach.

• Two viewing platforms were added during a major restoration in 2005.
• The castle gate has been reconstructed and the site is open to visitors.
• Look out for the rock-cut grooves near the entrance — they once held the beams of more than 100 wooden steps.

Legend has it that the fearless widow María Széchy — known as the 'Venus of Murán' — defended these walls against imperial troops, and her story inspired one of the oldest surviving Slovak folk songs.
