Manufaktur der Träume is a one-of-a-kind experience museum in Annaberg-Buchholz, right in the heart of the Ore Mountains, showcasing folk art traditions from the region. Spread across 1,100 square meters, it houses the Marie Ströher Memorial Collection – the largest and most significant private collection of Ore Mountains folk art in the German-speaking world.

It's the perfect stop for hikers looking to swap mountain trails for a journey through carved angels, miners, wooden pyramids, nutcrackers and toys. Behind an unassuming historic facade, the museum reveals a strikingly modern interior spread over three themed floors: Seeing, Making, and Marveling. It makes a great rainy-day alternative or a relaxing wind-down after a day on the Ore Mountain ridges.

How to get there

• Museum entrance in the pedestrian zone Buchholzer Straße, close to the market square in Annaberg-Buchholz – easily reached on foot from the town centre
• Access via a small bridge from the former cloakroom of the Kulturhaus Erzhammer, through Museumsgasse, straight into the exhibition

• Opened on 29 October 2010, after a two-year conversion of the historic former Café Central
• The collection includes around 1,500 valuable folk art objects dating from the 18th century to the present, most from 1890–1930

Fun fact: the collection was originally meant for Freiberg, but it was Annaberg-Buchholz that ultimately won over collector Erika Pohl-Ströher, whose family roots trace back to this very region.
