Tucked along the left bank of the Olt River between Sibiu and Făgăraș, Cârța Monastery is one of Transylvania's most atmospheric medieval treasures. Founded by Cistercian monks at the turn of the 13th century, it still stands today as a working Evangelical Lutheran church — its ancient Gothic stonework alive with over 800 years of history.

There is a rare stillness to this place. The graceful arches and weathered stone walls rise against the backdrop of the Făgăraș Mountains to the south, and the gentle Olt River flows nearby. In summer the surroundings are lush and green, while autumn drapes everything in gold — both seasons making the monastery feel almost otherworldly. Even a short visit leaves a lasting impression.

When Cistercian monks arrived here around 1202–1206, they brought with them the French Gothic architectural style — making Cârța one of the earliest and most important examples of Gothic art in all of southern Transylvania. A small place with an enormous legacy.
