Krásna Hôrka is one of Slovakia's most dramatic medieval castles, perched on a cone-shaped hill above the village of Krásnohorské Podhradie near Rožňava. With origins in the 14th century, a turbulent history involving three powerful noble families, and a devastating fire in 2012, this is a place that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.

The castle is a striking sight in every season — the surrounding hills of the Slovak Ore Mountains turn lush green in summer and blaze with autumn colours come October. From the castle walls, the views stretch across the valleys and ridges of the Gemer region. The distinctive dome-shaped hill makes the fortress visible from miles around, building anticipation well before you even begin the ascent.

The castle passed through the hands of three noble families — the Mariássys, the Bebeks and the Andrássys — before becoming a family museum open to the public as early as 1875. Even during reconstruction, the hilltop setting and the sheer scale of the fortifications make the trip well worth the journey.
