The castle was owned for generations by the powerful Thököly family — Stefan Thököly purchased it in 1610 for 13,000 Hungarian florins. Above the entrance tower gate, a stone tablet bearing the coats of arms of Stefan I Thököly and his wife Katarina Thurzo still carries the Latin inscription: 'TURRIS FORTISSIMA NOMEN DOMINI' — 'The strongest tower is the name of the Lord'.
