How to get there

• From Nagyoroszi or Drégelypalánk — marked hiking trail, moderate difficulty
• By train on the MÁV line 75 (Vác–Balassagyarmat) to the Drégelyvár stop at the northwestern edge of Nagyoroszi, then via forest paths to the castle

• Only accessible on foot via marked trails — no direct road access

In 1552, a garrison of just 146 men under Captain György Szondi held out for three days against Ali Pasha's 12,000-strong Ottoman army — when defeat became certain, they chose to die fighting rather than surrender, a story still told in Hungarian song and legend today.
