The City of Rijeka Museum offers a fascinating journey through the economic, political, cultural and sporting history of Rijeka, spanning from the 18th century to today. Rather than a dry historical archive, it's a vivid collection of objects, photographs and documents that bring the city's past to life.
Since 2020, the museum's main home has been the striking Sugar Refinery Palace (Palača šećerane), where a permanent exhibition traces centuries of Rijeka's development. Beyond this main site, the museum also includes a purpose-built 1976 building in the courtyard of the Governor's Palace, as well as the historic motor ship Galeb, a real treat for anyone interested in maritime heritage. The blend of industrial-era architecture and modern museum design makes for an engaging visit whatever the season.

Practical information
Interestingly, the museum's roots trace back to the Museum of the National Revolution, founded in 1961 in the house of Count Laval Nugent, whose holdings still form part of today's collections.
