Perched dramatically on top of a volcanic hill above the city of Deva, the Fortress of Deva is one of Transylvania's most striking landmarks. The volcanic hill rises almost vertically from the surrounding cityscape, giving the fortress a commanding presence you can spot from miles away. The fortress is the setting of the Hungarian folk tale 'The Wife of Clement the Mason', a haunting legend in which a young woman is said to have been built into the castle walls to ensure the fortress would stand forever — a story that still gives this ancient place its mysterious edge.
