The Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral in Sibiu is one of Transylvania's most striking religious landmarks — a Byzantine-style basilica built from red and yellow brick, its twin bulb-topped spires rising 45 metres above the city centre. From the outside, the building impresses with its four towers, mosaic roundels depicting Jesus and the Four Evangelists, and a grand three-arched portico entrance. Step inside and the atmosphere becomes quietly overwhelming: a gilt carved-wood iconostasis, neo-Byzantine wall paintings, and a soaring dome 24.7 metres high showing Christ Pantocrator surrounded by angels. The cathedral feels alive in every season — hushed and golden in winter light, vibrant during major religious feasts.

The cathedral was completed in just two years (1902–1904), a remarkable feat. Its magnificent iconostasis and dome paintings are the work of Octavian Smigelschi, an artist from the nearby village of Ludoș — a local talent who left a lasting mark on one of Romania's finest sacred spaces.
