In the heart of Zittau's Green Ring park network ticks a rather unusual clock - its face is made entirely of living flowers, and its chimes come from delicate porcelain bells. It's a charming little stop that adds a touch of whimsy to any walk through town.

The Flower Clock has been keeping time since 1907, born from an idea that first appeared during an industrial exhibition in 1902. The flower bed forming the clock face is replanted three times a year, so depending on the season you'll find it dressed in different colors - always neat, always blooming. It's a peaceful spot to pause before or after exploring the surrounding Zittau Mountains.

• The carillon of 21 Meissen porcelain bells plays well-known folk songs on the hour

Fun fact: in 2017, to mark the carillon's 50th anniversary, it was fully restored and fitted with electronic controls that allow new melodies to be played.
