Angustia is a Roman military fort tucked away at the eastern edge of Transylvania, right at the mouth of the Oituz Pass. This is a spot for travelers who love uncovering history off the beaten path — no crowds, no signage, just a striking earthen rampart still tracing the outline of an ancient Roman camp in an open field.

The setting has a quiet, raw character — open farmland framed by distant hills, with a real sense that time has slowed down here. In summer the ramparts are covered in grass, autumn light rakes across the earthworks revealing their shape, and in winter the site feels almost forgotten, adding to its mysterious pull. Don't expect visitor infrastructure — this is a genuine open-air archaeological site.

How to get there

• Brețcu village, Covasna County — the fort lies northeast of the village near the Oituz Pass, easy access on flat terrain
• Alternatively, follow the national road toward the Oituz Pass and turn off toward the field where the earthen rampart is visible

Practical information

• The fort is unmarked — there are no information panels or signposts on site
• Roman baths (thermae) were discovered about 100 m from the fort during excavations in 1925-1926
• Coins found here include Roman denarii and a Dacian silver imitation of an Alexander the Great drachma
• A bronze military diploma dated 14 June 92 AD was discovered nearby in 1547

Interestingly, in May 2010 a German-Romanian team scanned the entire fort area with modern archaeological equipment — yet this remarkable site still awaits proper recognition by visitors.
