The Lechweg is a roughly 125 km long-distance trail that follows the wild Lech River from its alpine source all the way to a dramatic waterfall in Bavaria. It was the first cross-border trail certified as a 'Leading Quality Trail - Best of Europe' by the European Ramblers' Association, and it combines rugged alpine scenery with gentle valley walking.
The trail begins at Lake Formarinsee in Vorarlberg, following the Formarinbach stream until it merges with the Spullerbach to form the Lech River. From there it passes through Lech am Arlberg, Warth, Lechleiten, Steeg and Holzgau, home to a spectacular 200.5-metre suspension bridge over the Höhenbach gorge. The route continues via Elbigenalp, birthplace of the legendary 'Geierwally', past the Doser waterfall, through Stanzach and across the border into Germany, reaching Alpsee lake with views of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles before finishing at the Lechfall waterfall in Füssen. The trail is marked in colour #1a202c and mostly follows gentle, well-maintained valley paths with river views throughout.
Difficulty and terrainAlong the way you'll pass one of Europe's largest ibex colonies, historic chapels and museums, and the curious Doser waterfall, which according to legend is opened and closed each year by a dragon.
