Alpe Hohenschwand is one of the oldest alpine huts in the Allgäu region, first mentioned back in 1638. Today it's a self-catering shelter run by the SSV Ulm 1846 section of the German Alpine Club (DAV), offering a rustic and authentic mountain experience.
The hut sits on the northwest slope of the Prodel, within the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park, surrounded by classic alpine pastures and forest. In summer it makes a peaceful base for exploring the Allgäu Alps, with wide views over the surrounding ridges. In winter, the landscape turns quiet and snow-covered, perfect for snowshoeing or ski touring. The atmosphere here is simple and unpretentious — this is not a full-service hut, but a place for those who appreciate solitude and self-sufficiency in the mountains.

Practical information
Interestingly, Alpe Hohenschwand served for centuries as a working alpine dairy hut, and only after 2006, when it passed to the Bavarian State Forests, did the DAV take over and gradually restore the badly weathered building.
